The Cedar Island Lighthouse stands as a silent sentinel, guarding the entrance to Sag Harbor since its construction in 1839. During its heyday, Sag Harbor was a bustling port, home to a fleet of whaling ships and vessels engaged in fishing and transportation. The original lighthouse, replaced in 1868, guided mariners safely through the waters, solidifying Sag Harbor's position as one of the East Coast's premier ports.
Decommissioned in 1934, the Cedar Island Lighthouse passed through private ownership until it became part of Suffolk County's Cedar Point Park in the late 1960s. Originally situated on a three-acre island, a sandbar formed after the devastating hurricane of 1938, connecting Cedar Island to the mainland, now known as Cedar Point.
Despite facing vandalism and the harsh elements, the lighthouse, constructed of sturdy New England granite, has endured. A fire in 1974 ravaged its interior, leading to its closure and preservation. Over the years, it has stood as a silent witness to the changing tides of time, awaiting restoration and attention.
In the early 2000s, the Long Island Chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society spearheaded efforts to restore the Cedar Island Oil House, a vital structure adjacent to the lighthouse. Now, with authorization from Suffolk County Parks, the society aims to "Relight the Lighthouse," breathing new life into this historic beacon.
Lighthouses hold a special place in Long Island's history, serving as guardians of its coastline and guiding ships to safety for centuries. From Hell Gate to Montauk Point, these iconic structures dot the shores, embodying the maritime tradition of the region.
Of the twenty-two lighthouses constructed between 1798 and 1912, twenty still stand today, many restored and preserved. However, the Cedar Island Lighthouse stands among the few awaiting salvation, a poignant reminder of our heritage and history.
As efforts to restore and relight the Cedar Island Lighthouse gain momentum, it serves as a testament to our commitment to preserving Long Island's maritime legacy for future generations. In its silent vigil, it beckons us to honor the past and safeguard the future of our coastal heritage.
