The Historic Thomas Moran House in East Hampton
Nestled in the charming village of East Hampton, New York, the Thomas Moran House stands as a testament to the rich artistic legacy of the 19th century. Located at 229 Main Street, this historic house museum was once the home of renowned painters Thomas Moran and Mary Nimmo Moran. Built in 1884, the house has since been designated a National Historic Landmark for its significant contributions to American art history.
A Landmark of Artistic Heritage
Thomas Moran, the first major painter to bring scenes of the American West to the broader public, made this eclectic two-story frame structure his home and studio. The house, constructed primarily from recycled materials, is characterized by its unique architecture and historical charm. The main room, Moran's studio, features 20-foot ceilings and ample natural light, providing the perfect setting for his artistic creations. This space also served as a gathering place for fellow artists and visitors, including notable figures like J. Thompson and Robert Wood.
Historical Significance
The Moran House was the primary residence of Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran from 1884 until Thomas's death in 1926. The couple is buried in the nearby South Side Cemetery by the Town Pond, adding a poignant connection to their long-term residence. After remaining privately owned for many years, the house was bequeathed to the owners of Guild Hall by Elizabeth Lamb in 2004. The house had fallen into disrepair, but in June 2008, it was transferred to the Thomas Moran Trust, which successfully raised funds for its restoration. By early 2018, the house had been beautifully restored and is now open to the public by reservation under the care of the East Hampton Historical Society.
